To Jane's Fans

face_close_iconWhat a Monday... well, after Dave talked about us jamming last week at the MTV Movie Awards, it seemed all quiet, then yesterday MTV posted a news article with him talking about our new band. It took about 5 minutes for the news to start spreading through the web. All of a sudden, a Jane's Addiction fan message board went crazy calling it the end of Jane's and posting a picture of me in Skycycle and saying I was "effectively the new Jane's Addiction singer". Let me just comment on that.

It's totally fucking nuts.

No one in the universe could replace Perry Farrell and for anyone to try would be ridiculous. For a long time, Jane's music was very important to me. Perry's words gave my feelings a voice, and the rage and beauty of the music gave my youth a soundtrack. I was at Lolla 1, saw Jane's at Universal Amphitheatre for the Ritual Tour (with NIN opening), and last year at the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas. When I worked at MTV, I stole a "Ritual de lo Habitual" gold record off the wall of the studio, and it's hanging on the wall at home. If they ever play again, I will be there too. Perry is an absolute one-of a kind, and I think the world is better place with him in it creating and making music and art.

I don't know what the future of Jane's Addiciton is, but I do know from being in a band for 5 years, that you yearn to play with other people and see what making new music sounds like. Life is beautiful, magical, and way too short, and to spend time not making music makes you die a little bit inside. I know about that, too.

Dave, Stephen, and Chris are unbelievable musicians, and musicians want to play. It's a warm wonderful summer in Los Angeles and we found that we like writing songs, so that's what we're going to do: be creative together. I have found that it is pretty special when 4 people can be in a room and write songs, it's more rare than you would think... so when it happens, go for it.

I apologize for the online mouth-breathers who are treating you like the anti-Christ because you DARE to jam with Dave, Perk, and Chris. just thought I'd let you know that not all Jane's Addiction fans hold their own disappointment against you. cheers, and good luck with your new band.

hey, fuck these cry baby j.a. fans. I've seen jane's quite a few times dating back to '88 and i'm thrilled to hear that dave, perk, and chris want to record as a unit. I want to be the first to congradulate you on your new band. Keep your ear's open and pay attention and your gonna learn alot from these cats. Your right it is about "new" music. I'm starting to feel like some of j.a. fan web sites and full of kooks who were to young to be at the '88 and '89 shows and they're just talking shit so they can have something to talk about. Peace and be well and most of all have fun recording with those guy's you lucky bastard!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a huge Jane's Addiction fan, and I'd just like to say that I'm happy to see the Jane's boys playing in any setting. Just make sure that you let your music breathe a little, don't smother it with the Iron Curtain that is the media.

even though i am a little unsure about the direction dave and stephen are choosing to take with you singing...i'll wait for any such judgement and say at least you aren't calling the new band jane's addiction like they did last time with chris chaney. surely you already know the comparisons to perry are gonna come before you agreed to do this, so i won't fault you for trying to fill the shoes of a great lead singer. and wether you think so or not you are trying to fill the shoes of perry as is anyone singing with dave and stephen. just know maynard did it once and it sounded great, better than perry as of late.

I saw you many, many years ago with an ex of mine as you were playing the lead in "Tommy". You weren't bad then. (you're not bad now, either). You've got to understand the mentality of the Jane's fans (of which I am one) is that they are pissed. Jane's went from '91 to '97 without anything out, they did a reunion tour and the worthless greatest hits album without one of the core creative geniuses of the band. This, by the way, marked the SECOND bassist of the group. Perry and Dave put out solo albums (which basically, for all intents and purposes commerically tanked) and they turned back to Jane's. They reunited in early 2001 for a Jubilee tour (which the original intent was to pay Perry's bills) that was overshadowed by 9/11 with bass player NUMBER THREE. They then went into a studio to record their third (some would argue fourth) studio album with something of a surprise as a producer. They then got their FOURTH and final bassist into the band, who, somewhat ironically did something of a switch-out with original bassist Eric Avery from Janes to Alanis Morrisette (and back again, so to speak).

Anyhow, what we as Jane's fans are seeing is the dillution of Jane's Addiction as we know it. It is getting less and less pure and more and more clouded, twisted and diluted from it's original roots. Coupled with the fact that from everything we've been hearing from inside and outside the band about the future of Jane's being on the rocks more now than ever, we're angry. This means that the possibility of a jane's reunion is even more nonexistent.

i guess the best commonsense way to put this is our parents are separated and you're our dad's new girlfriend. you could be the greatest girlfriend in the world but i (and my brothers and sisters) don't care because in my mind, you're the easiest thing to see that's keeping my parents apart, keeping us from being a family. make sense?

you must be good for steve and dave to jam with you. they're helluva guys and great musicians, and i'm interested to see what you guys are/ will create. but at the same time, i feel a little hurt and angry. it's not your fault. you're probably a great guy, and a good musician to boot, you were good in tommy, as i said earlier. understand though, not all the jane's fans are as forgiving as i am. :)

feel free to email me if you'd like to discuss further.

Steve...First, and FINALLY you have found yourself in the company of musicians who are deserving of your talent. I am so glad for your new project, and hope to hear nothing but what I would always expect from you...what you have tought me years ago. I know that your position is not to "replace" another...especially one that you have respected for many years...as I have. You stand alone, and as an individual (just like when those MTV execs made you dye your great blue hair to be on "their" show!!!!) How the years have passed...and to see that someone like you is appreciated for your obvious talents. You jumped all the hurdles...swallowing all the pride you had at times...all I can say is ENJOY!!

Just know that there are those of us who still remember the after hours...after jams at the Highlands...where nothing else mattered but a man with a guitar...and hopefully for those who haven't enjoyed...that voice that has at least inspired me as a musician...you have replaced no one...you are always who you were...someone who makes music and enjoys every minute of creating what is magical within us all...thanks for teaching me that!!! Good Luck Man!!!! You deserve all that comes to you...

"We are the Music Makers..." You know the rest!!!

P.S. (Still fondly remember you as Spooky ((Even Dave said so))...and oh yeah...the "213" cassette seems like an 8 track in ages...in dog years that's like 100!!!)

Luv Ya Man!!!

Steve! Do you remember the name? If you actually read this, perhaps Palm Springs 1999 may jog your memory?? A show with Dovetail Joint. I'm a radio guy, supported Skycycle for quite awhile and we were in contact for quite awhile as well. Anyway, I would LOVE to catch up if you're interested. I see your into Poker pretty hardcore, thus we could probably talk for hours!! Send me an email and hopefully we can connect. Great news about the band. Take care.

Hi,
I am also a big Jane's fan and i love them more than any other band in the world.
The reason i write this is that i just want to emphasize that i completely agree with what was written before by "sympatheticdevil". I read the respective e-mails and find it very strange that this dude seems to think he can talk for all the Jane's fans and his tone is very unrespectful.
Sorry for that from an other fan.

I wish you all the best for your work with Dave, Stephen and Chris !

Perhaps it's a good thing to do consider that with Steve being one of the songwriters now, the songs might not turn out the way everyone is used to with Jane's Addiction. I also don't expect it to become a "mixture" between JA and Skycycle. I think they'll just go on and explore new ways.

As for those who wonder what the f* Skycycle is (/was), check out http://www.skycycleonline.com/, it's back up. You can download most of their work from the MEDIA Section, and the tracks from "Ones And Zeros" are nice for a start ;-)

And as for Steve, now you've got your Mac's back to work, when do you reckon I'll get one (or more) discs containing "stuff" that I'm still supposed to get from you? (websites, b-sides, fantasize) Hehe, don't want to put pressure on you, relax. It would just be nice to get everything up in time for the Untitled Band thing, though... I'm getting quite sick of the current design and actually feeling I should replace it with the last site from your hand and just expand the info on that one with what's on the site right now. Overhaul time =)

Wow, I didn't know that Jane's Addiction fans were such whiney bitches. The news of Steve joining up with Dave et al is KILLER news for the world of rock. I can't wait to hear the amazing things that come out of those sessions, I'm sure it will put Audioslave and Velvet Revolver to shame...I'm talking Mad Season quality all star line-up material. Steve has a killer rock voice and some of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard in my life - perhaps it's because you can tell the guy loves and appreciates the Beatles, Queen, Zeppelin, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley... so Jane's fans, shut you holes and open your ears, your asses are about to be ROCKED!

Sam

I agree with Sam, that Steve does have the most incredible rock voice and I CAN'T WAIT to hear what comes from this incredible union.

Steve's sincerity, intentions, and talent is real - leave him alone and let him rock.

Ok...... two of the original members from Jane's have a new project. Am I the only one who realizes that this group will not be out on the road playing Jane's tunes? We all trust the musical tastes of everyone involved with this project except for Steve and this is probably a source of the backlash. That being said... I loved Deconstruction, I go see Banyan as often as possible, I am fond of Trust No One, and I still listen to One Hot minute on a regular basis. None of these projects feature/featured Perry's pipes and they are all great in their own right. However, none of these projects were designed for MTV either and I think this may be the perception here. Dave said it himself..... good looking guy, used to be a VJ. Enter the more severe backlash from a FEW Jane's fans.

I think most all music fans with good taste have come to despise MTV and all that it stands for. But you can't hate a guy for being a VJ..... well except Adam Curry. Hell anyone of us would take that gig in a second. Another one of my all time favorite singers, Shannon Hoon, even gave it a stab!

So lets move on here. Steve hasn't even had a chance yet. He obviously cares what we as fans think and here he is reaching out to the community. For that I applaud him and I look forward to what is sure to be a kick ass fucking record. Now is there anyway we can get Rick Rubin to produce this bastard?

And believe me...... it is a well known fact in the cyber Jane's community that Hokahey can be a little bitch sometimes (and sonny too). I think he is waaaaaay out of line on this one and the guy seems to think it is still 1991.

Good luck to you Steve. However, the people watching this new line-up with the most interest are gonna be Jane's fans, so if the band takes the celebrity, MTV, Dave+Carmen route then whilst you may make serious dollar, you're never gonna have any repsect. Think back to why you loved Jane's in the first place - obviously the music is predominantly what makes anyone a fan but just as important with Jane's Addiction was integrity and passion. Wouldn't you prefer to be in a band with these qualities? You've got a great opportunity - don't sell out and blow it. I look forward to hearing what you guys produce.

Hmmm, let's make this an open letter to Hoka from http://www.aintnoright.com/ I just thought of it a little more and thougth I should just do this.

To Hoka,

The first part of your open letter focuses on Steve's love for Jane's Addiction, and how that, in your opinion, doesn't fit with him causing the demise of "what might have been one of the greatest bands of all time". In the first place, that is very egoistic as you cannot control whether a band decides to stick together, break up, or continue in a different setting and with different perspectives. With your effort to conserve what can never be anymore, you are trying to force people to do what you command them to, just because you want it that way. The second problem with that is that you appear to never have understood the music business at all, and have definitely not been in a band whatsoever. I really hope you have a brother or sister with whom you lived for many years in a row because that would make the comparison easier. You see, band members become like brothers and/or sisters, and apart from the close bond, it also means fighting and arguing. You're on one another's lips virtually the whole time; packed in a bus on tour, locked in the studio when recording. And at a certain moment you can just get sick of being together for so very long that you need to part ways. Often the split is amically. I mean, look at it from my perspective; do you know how sad I was learning that Skycycle had come to an end? Hence my excitement when they appeared to come back together but alas, they only did one show.

Later on you get back at that and analyze the situation after their returns in quite an accurate manner. Based on those things you say about them being media whores, cancelling shows, disappearing and all, how hard is it to get it through your thick head that things weren't okay between them? It just didn't work, despite their efforts which, I'm sure, they devoted much time for on behalf of the fans. But it seems that according to you, they should now all go and cry or whine (much like you, huh?) and feeling miserable, in stead of moving on, pursuing the dreams they have always had, and just trying to make music? Fundamentally, real musicians aren't out there for the money, but for the vibe based on the music they make and the response from fans to that. And now they are indeed working on that again, all you can do is whine WITHOUT YOU EVEN HAVING HEARD WHAT RESULTED FROM THAT. I won't stop you when you want to hold on to your principles that now the same guys you have always worshipped as true though whining fan of JA are now working with other guys, that everything will suck. Have you realized yet that now you say "fuck your new band", you are telling three of the four guys to go fuck themselves as well? You're so stupid, incredible!

I feel rather sorry for you that you must be too blind to see that JA couldn't work anymore, and that the band members are still devoted to their fans, even whiners like you, and trying to make the best of it as much as they can. Lastly I'd like to point out that it is really easy to say the most cruel things to people who are getting more renowned, people who come into the spotlight. Every time that happens, there always are people who disagree for various reasons, and there are always things to be whining about. It's just interesting to see that the only arguments you were able to come up with in your blind rage were that even though he may seem and even be nice, you disagree on that. That's so sad. Get a life, and deal with this.

It's only rock and roll, get the fuck over it.

Tell Steve Perkins that his ex - Rebecca gave great head!

Kidding... Steve Rocks! Jaynes Rocks! I am sure your new band will be great. Only heard of his ex through an old artical from way way back.

I also am a JA fan going back to 87'. I was a friend of a friend of the band. She took me to see them at the SCREAM. What a blast! I had an opportunity to hang with Steve once or twice. Got stoned. I remember when they just got the first record contract with Sony and even had, I even had a basement recording on cassette of them fucking around and jamming. Of course I lost it. So pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
