Ears Bleed

face_close_iconCaution, another music geek gear post, prepare yourself:

I am in a mad rush to see if the new amp can be ready to assimilate into the band by gig time. Today  loaded it up in the car and moved it to the rehearsal room. Set it up and did a bunch of playing. Worked the clean tone, fleshed out the dirty channel. ( um, ok, that sounds funny).

I set up the amp next to the Bogner I have been using and did a taste test. Had a few questions about getting good tones from the Div by 13, so I called Fred and he gave me some hints.

Got everything up and running, and had alot of fun playing really really loud for a few hours. At this point, all I can do is play with the band and see how the new tone fits in. Its odd because it's not just a new amp, its a whole new sound for me. The Bogner I was using had a great clean tone, and the dirty was super overdriven. When Brian Virtue came by last Friday, he thought I was running it too distorted. After really listening to both amps today, I realized he was right. Too much distortion (some might argue) is a bad thing. I would rather Dave have the super dirty sound, and have mine be more warm and organic. Thing is, I've never had a tone like this before. Hard to say if it's better or not, it's just different. Only playing with all the instruments at full blast will tell me what I need to know.

Tomorrow I will spend a few hours before the guys get there and suss out my pedalboard, make sure everything I run is needed, and get the kicking of the pedals all comfortable.

At the moment my pedal board looks like this:

Div by 13 "Dyna-Ranger" (overdrive pedal)

Boss Superchorus

Div by 13 "Switchazel" (Clean /Dirty Channel switcher, with Clean+Dirty simulataneously, and a Boost. "For that little push over the cliff...)

Boss Tuner

hee hee hee...thanks for the warning Steve, though it wasn't too "techi" for me this time ;)

I can't wait to hear you guys!!! Already excited to go... see at the show (I hope...)

I'm with you, Abby. I actually understood most of what Steve was talking about this time, enough to say that the geek porn of "fleshing out the dirty" and "would rather Dave have super dirty" REALLY has me excited to go, see you at the show!

i agree with both abby and jezebel! don't worry steve, we understood ya. (this time)

Yes, also understood by me. :D
I hate to admit this but I understood the other so called "geek" posts. I'm not saying I know a lot about amps, etc, I don't really, I just somehow understood them. Latent techi geek me? I did hang out with engineers though, that must be it. Not even looking at it as geek. Does that mean I am one?
I do find these posts fascinating, and want to know more.

Steve, thanks for your clarifications. I think I should have reread your posts before I opened my big mouth! :D I should have also been in bed by then, when I was posting, that's my excuse.

Linda~thanks for the email, much appreciated.

That's a great pic with the reflection in the pool of you Steve.

Steve, Steve, tomorrow. Wooohooo! I'm in Wales, boo hoo hoo.....

Singing a song from Annie right now, Lisa, guess?

by the way, Linda is the name of my evil twin, you're welcome!
jezzi

AHA! Jez, Linda, Jessie, Jezebel... I like to call you Jez, hope you like that too! :P

I too have an evil twin, except she's much sweeter than me.
She appears as Merlengwen, mostly on FreAk's forum.

Jez, of all the shows I can't stand, it's Annie. Arghhhh! Sorry folks if you like it. Those songs make me cover my ears and beg for mercy.

Steve, I know you are going to be great tomorrow. I feel it in my fingers....
(attempt to get back at Jez)

Seriously, Steve, you are going to do great, I can tell, and you are obviously very professional about all this, and I admire that a great deal.

I find it also amazing how some people just have great voices, play guitar really well, know all tons about the technical side of things...while the rest of us bum around like me, I'm definately a slacker.
(Librans are known for that) So any advice on getting off my arse?

Tomorrow
Tomorrow
I love ya
Tomorrow
You're only a day away!!!
Second verse, same as the first

ARGHHH! Mercy please mercy...

I LOVE Annie!!!!
...you're never fully dressed without a smile....

(*^_^*)

I'm guessing that your amp goes to 11? Are we allowed to look at your amp at the gig? lol

Steve,

Just want to say have a fantastic gig tomorrow.

And a question why "that" name?! (answer: because "the beef curtains" was just too gross!! - sorry, wash out my mouth with soap)

Anyway, have a fantastic time (that goes for everyone else too) and hope the 13 loses its virginity in a salubrious rock orgy ;)

(Randy.......STONE HENGE MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!)

PeaceOut (RockOut) Thinking of you all from across the pond...

All the best for tomorrow Steve, and Enjoy it, that's what matters.

Steve, if you ever have any questions regarding pedals, let me know. I've got tons of boutique pedals and I've tried about everything! Divided By 13 make great amps and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. I also have been dealing with John Ferrante and I bought a Bad Cat Black Cat 30r 2x12 combo from him. I think this is the perfect amp for "voxish" type tones. I like how it compresses at a higher volume. That's typical though of EL84 power tubes. I thought about the hot cat, but it may have a bit too much gain for me. Which Bogner are you using?

Curt - agentcooper2001@aol.com

BTW, Here is my latest pedalboard setup:

Teese RMC3 wah
zVex fuzz factory
analogman - king of tone od
FoxRox ZIM od/distortion
Frantone Vibutron
Fulltone Choralflange
Pigtronix Envelope Phaser
Maxon AD900 analog delay
Electro Harmonix 16 second delay
Boss TU2 tuner

all on a NGM pedalboard. Nick, the guy who builds these is in Houston and he does a great job. It is built like a road case.

Steve, I forgot to mention, come visit thegearpage.net or the harmonycentral.com effects forum. The amp forum on HC is kind of crazy though. The amp forum on the gear page is much better and there aren't many kids posting useless crap.

The guys there have given me a ton of help over the years deciding on amps and various effects, tubes, etc. The way you describe your Bogner sounds like you have a Shiva, right? Great clean channel, very fenderish to me.

Curt

Steve- Can't wait to see you rock out with the fellas tomorrow. I hope you get all the amp stuff sorted out. My ears are waiting...Brett

Abby~If you love Annie, then you must have loved my "Steve, Steve, tomorrow. Wooohooo! I'm in Wales, boo hoo hoo....." song! :D

Steve, I think FreAk has said the best thing, enjoy it that's what matters. So true.

Enjoy it!

I think I'm the only one lost. It's definitely a different language for me. Maybe one day I can fully understand it.

Steve, here is a link to a thread on the gear page about Divided By 13 amps. It has some info on attenuators that work well with these amps. If you get a attenuator, such as the THD hot plate, you can use your amp at home and it will sound awesome at lower volumes.

Hey Steve I've got a amp geek question for you (or anyone else who can answer). I've screwed around with matchless, vox, and black cats. Bogners, Marshalls, mesas, fenders, .... ok you get the picture, I'm a damn junkie. I also keep a couple of flextone II's around. I've not however had the chance to run across one of these Div by 13's so if you had to compare to a setting on the flextone/ POD's, anything close?

Shane, IMO modeling amps haven't come far enough to get anywhere to close to a high quality tube amp tone. The line 6 amps are cool to mess around with at home and at they sound ok at low volumes, but live, they don't cut it for me. Solid state and modeling amps just haven't got that overdriven tone that only a amp with tubes cooking gets. To me, EL84 based amps sound awesome! They're definitely my favorite. I love the way they slightly compress at higher volumes. Maybe someday a modeling amp will get there, but they haven't gotten close yet. I havne't personally played the divided by 13 but alot of my friends own them and they sound great. I personally use the Bad Cat Black Cat 30r, but I wouldn't mind trying a 13 as well. The Bad Cat also has a great master volume that can be defeated when pulled out.

Steve, rock out EXTRA HARD at the gig, and everyone whos going scream EXTRA LOUD for me and everyobody who cant be there... i want to be there so so so bad... but alas, i cant. anyway, someone really needs to tape this show, someone get it on dvd or something, i will buy one for sure. this is the first ever panic channel gig, this is reaching legendary proportions in my book.

so steve, i send all my good wishes your way tonight, and make some sort of ritual tonight so that when you guys are 50 years old you can say "~insert ritual here~ i did that at every panic channel show i ever did" yeah, i dont know, maybe im insane, but i wouldnt care anyway.

do you think i can hitchhike to california in 3 hours?
