Cleanin' Out The Closet

face_close_iconNo internet for 12 days, 3708 new emails. Nice. Mostly junk mail. Man, I forget how tied up my whole existence is with this machine. It was actually nice not being on a computer for a while, though. The first couple days were touch-and-go, I was pretty twitchy. Reminds me that I have a tendancy to overdo almost anything I do, and that you can use the computer as too much of an escape from "real" life.

One to grow on ...(cue sensitive piano theme).

Here's what else has been happening...

Panic News: Spent 3 days in the studio with Gummo (Brian Virtue) adding "icing" to the record tracks. Dave laid some guitars (Beefier chorus guitar on "Half Hearted" and twiddly bits at the end of "Outsider") as well as his vocal harmonies on "Loophole" and "Ashes". I put harmonies on "Ashes", "Outsider" and "Go On". I started to on "Half Hearted" but got all frustrated and pissed off and left that for another day. thought it was best to go work on the tricky part at home, then bring it in all sussed out, instead of trial and error-ing it to death. We got alot of good work done. At the start of recording the record I was into having a relatively raw sounding record, to showcase how we sound as a band, and not "tarting" things up to much with the harmonies and icing, but as things have progressed, we have been adding more and more to the songs. To tell the truth, it's just really fun coming up with harmonies and ear candy parts, and it's better to have them in there, then to not put them in at all. We can always omit elements in mixing, but it's better to have all that stuff in there to use if we want to. We will break for the holiday, then I go back in and finish up any singing there is to be done.

Got my haircut today and they were playing the best music, this one song came on and I loved it and asked who it was - it was The Secret Machines - I need to track that one down.

Finally found the Lindsay Lohan lipsynching video. Enjoy. Hey, she may be lipsycnching but what a fantastic song!!!

And speaking of LipSynching...

Here is this weeks “Saturday Night Live Lip Synch report” (where Steve self-righteously armchair polices the state of “live” performance on SNL):

Destiny’s Child edition: Beyonce and those other two chicks did their thing on the Robert DeNiro hosted show last Saturday, looked like each girl sang only their individual verse vocal live, while the other two did taped backups, and it sounded like the choruses were all taped. So a big “Fuck You!” To Destiny’s Child. You are great singers, and should sing your shit live, there wasn’t even any heavy dancing to blame your lip-synching on. We know you can pull it off live, why not just do it.

Ok, more later, I am going to make up for all this damn missing Internet-ness in my life... hope you are all well, thanks so much for the kind vibes you sent out. Riss and I are off to See Lemony Snicket now.

Hi Steve,

just want to wish you and Riss a Happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Don't forget: Europe is waiting for TPC !!!

love,

The Secret Machines are an amazing band. They really are trying something different than most bands on the radio today, but yet their sound definitely has the idea of where music should be going. Happy holidays to everyone...M

hey Steve,

i totally understand what you mean about your computer being your life. i had the same situation with my emails this weekend. i had family in from Montana and wasn't on the computer from Thursday until Monday and had almost 50 emails, and surprisingly they were NOT mostly junk. and i wonder why i've put on a few pounds in the last few years!!! i need to get my ass up off this chair in the gym! glad to see you are connected to the world again. although, would you admit, it was kinda nice to be removed from the world for a while, right? reminds me of the good old days when people couldn't always get a hold of you whenever they needed. enough ramblin'... can't wait to see what you guys have for us on tpc.com Saturday.

HI ABBY! yep, i'm still around. i have been keeping up with the reading but not always posting. finals are over and i'm savoring every moment for the next three weeks or so. then my nose is unfortunately back to the grindstone.

What is it? Like buses round here?!!!

Thanks for the update(s) sounds like you've all got some exciting stuff happening still...

I'm going to back up for the Europe request (although I don't want to harp on about it) But get your arses over here anyway!

Wishing you everything you dream for in 2005

heLLo,

Welcome Back Sir Isaacs!
Connected to the "world" again??
Nice to see you back here.
Merry christmas to you and Riss.

Steve, I hear you on the overdo thing. However, it's better to overdo than not half-ass something, anything.

I have an idea, don't know whether it's do-able or not, but thought I'd run it by you. For the TPC upcoming release, I think it'd be a cool idea for a chance for some of us to be on it. I'm thinking of a chorus, similar to the "we don't need no education..." part in the Floyd song or the "feed the world" chorus-something similar. Freak could put up the song, we can then agree to an online release, the recording won't record until it detects we've agreed to the release, and then add our own voice to the chorus via computer mics. Limit it to the first 50 entrants or whatever so Gummo doesn't have a heart attack for the mix?? I think it'd be so bad ass and congruent with the graciousness of you and Dave to share your experiences of the birth of a band in these blogs. Your thoughts?

Hey Steve,
Do you play Halo 2 on Xbox Live? If you do, add NiGHTS2K... you won't be sorry. :D

Ahhhh I missed you, glad your up and running again!! Keep up the hard work, sounds like the songs are gonna be tight!
Wishing U, Riss n' the kittiez a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

LYN....now I can't get "Feed the World" outta my head, it's all ur fault "P I still remember all the words, that was when '84 when that came out, or was that when "Do they know it's Christmas" came out....

Peace n' luv peeps

Gr8 one Lyn!
I'm with you for the idea.

Mr. Isaacs! It's good to see you posting again!
Glad to hear the recording is coming along good.
Are you thinking of having a song that is purely instrumental with no vocals? I have a feeling you guys will give birth to something like that. Sometimes the instrumentals alone speak for themselves and no vocals are needed.

about DC: "You are great singers, and should sing your shit live, there wasn’t even any heavy dancing to blame your lip-synching on. We know you can pull it off live, why not just do it."

Amen to that!

Lyn- love that idea! However, I think if anyone is going to be on the record that they should be there physically in the studio with the guys so they can get some direction and input from them- they want it to come out perfect- and not to forget the fact that most of us that would like to participate don't have really good mics to record with.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not by any means an expert on the whole recording process, i can just offer opinions. If they want to use a choral group, it's going to sound best recorded with all the people singing together at once in the same room. i'm thinking it would be too much work combining many individual voices from all over the place together.
Would the whole band be ok with that, though, having a bunch of "strangers" who they technically know in the studio and on their record? Well, provided that we come up with the funds it doesn't necessarily have to be the same studio. We could get a separate one to assemble at and send it in once it's recorded. But then how would we know they'd be ok with what was done and use it in the end? It's tricky. Interesting suggestion though, it would be cool if they worked with it! Don't forget that we should be having a big role in promotion once they start touring.

Hi Sarah! Hope you're enjoying your time off :)

Same to every one of you- hope you all have a great holiday and that Santa is extra generous to you this year!

M

Mortisha-physically it'd be pretty darn difficult to get everyone to a studio in LA just to sing a chorus, I'm thinking. You don't really need a great mic to make a recording via computer. What I'm thinking is that Steve puts a chorus up on line. One then would sing over that chorus, kinda with Steve, and the recording is then imbedded so someone can take a group of these and mix it together. Nothing too elaborate, difficult, or extended in range, depth, or length. In the age of digital sounds, yes, it'd be some work involved, but may be easier and actually less work via computer. Plus, my ego would need a room all to itself. :) Online, everyone agrees to the release in order to avoid any legal BS. Hey, most or all of "The Wall" was recorded without any band members in the same place at once, and it sounds pretty good to me. My two cents, but yea, I appreciate the Devils' Ad position. I think we can do this, but of course, it all depends on whether or not TPC wants it and the tech guys can make it work (Freak!). What do you say, Steve?

No problems as far as Im concerned!
The Macs are ready!
Steve? ;-)

FreaK-aka "Freak the online Jam Guru ;)"-Would everything have to be sent in on an Apple or would any computer recording software work? For some reason my computer won't allow quicktime to download/company policy. That's kind of a bummer becuase I couldn't download your solo to she won't last or a majority of TPC stuff. Could the files be sent/converted into windows format? Just curious. Thanks

Brett

Ah, ok, i get you now Lyn! cool, for those with all the right equipment. Hope you guys get to do it!
