Ok, I don't know how up to date you are on important current events, so let me just bring you up to speed:
1. Pope John Paul II has died
2. ABC news anchor Peter Jennings has lung cancer
3. There is a legion of Star Wars uber-fans waiting in line in front of Hollywood's Grauman's Chinese Theater 43 days before the release of the movie, despite the fact that it won't be playing there when it opens.
Here's the whole story

Ok, now let me just say that I have a soft spot in my heart for over-the top super fans. In some ways it's kind of endearing. Before the spectacular failure, "Episode I"  was released, there was a similar line out in front of the world famous Chinese Theater. Instead of deriding or making fun of them, I kind of admired their single-minded determination. I have to admit that being passionate about something -even something seemingly trivial is more appealing than never being passionate about anything. One night a friend and I bought beer for the line standers, went out and talked to them, got a feel for who they were and why they were doing it. It was a trip. That said, after I endured the mind-numbing legacy-destroying shit fest that was Episode I, I had to move away from any kind feelings for the Star Wars prequels. "Hey, it wasn't so bad, Steve, c'mon..." you might say...

Yes it was. Watch again. Be honest. Listen to The Force whispering in your ear as you watch it ... "this is shit ... this is shit...Steve is right...".

I only give a shit, because the OG Star Wars was the shit. Like every kid my age, when the originals came out, my universe was erased and re-written, -earth shaking! Star Wars!

As great as Star Wars was, and how "Empire" was even better (with the tragic second chapter ending) truth be told, "Star Wars" began to jump the shark at "Revenge of the Jedi".

Yes, once again, admit it to yourself. Ewoks, the ham-handed merchandising ploy, the carbon copy of SW1 ending (bigger death star to destroy, big deal.) This is when Episode I was truly spawned.

So then we had Episode II. Ok, now I am destined to see all the SW flicks, crap or not, just to pay respect to my little 7 year old self. Just have to. So Episode II was slightly better, a bit more action, but still the empty characters, wooden acting, blatant idiotic leaps of faith with the plot, and that horrible fighting Yoda. Ok, it seemed ok in the moment, but looking back- c'mon, leave Yoda on the ground, what the hell is that?

This is why the current line standers fascinate and boggle me. Not only are they lining up for a movie that will SURELY and MOST DEFINITELY SUCK, but add to that that isn't out for over a month, and throw in that THEY ARE LINING UP AT THE WRONG THEATER!!!

Why do I care? Um, I dunno, actually. Maybe it's a little sad that something so mediocre is bound to be such a success no matter what. Maybe now the true desperation of the uber-SW fans is becoming terrifyingly apparent. Maybe I am pissed at George Lucas and his rapidly expanding "neck-like region" and wished he'd just made some damn good movies, and then raked in the boatloads of cash.

Maybe it was just time to post.

Steve-I don't get the whole Star Wars thing either........

Yep,

The seven-year-old in me weeps with you. I had to put an end to my fantasy after the crap that was Episode I came out. Steve, it is shit, and it's okay to speak up and proudly speak your mind.

Ha, maybe it was just time to post. You lost me at "3. There is a legion of..."

I think somebody started a thread about this at TPCC

One more thing, yeah it’s good to be passionate but seriously don’t these people have jobs, other things going on, don’t they need to have sex or masturbate or something??? I’m just saying…Now that’s a movie itself, I would love to have time to just see what it is that they 43 days waiting in line. And what happens to their life once this is over, no more SW. What are they gonna do? And why are they lining up in the wrong theater?? What’s that all about? So many questions..

You know I feel pretty stupid sometimes when I go to a concert a few hours before it starts just because I feel that I have to be in the front but I can’t imagine lining up 43, 30, 20, or even 2 days before just to see a gig. Maybe that’s my problem I need to be more passionate? I don’t know, I just don’t get it. Not to mention that it’s going to be playing for ever, is it really that important to say that they were the first “mortals” that saw it? I don’t think I’ll ever get it.

Wait a minute; I do have a pretty sick internet addiction. Maybe it’s a long the same lines???

Last post. I didn’t think it through too good, plenty of those things I mentioned they can actually do in line. Never mind, I better get back to work.

There is a tiny part of me that is holding out hope that this will be decent, but if Anakin is played by the same guy then I don't think it will be.
If you look closely, you'll notice an inverse relationship between the amount of involvement George Lucas has over a Star Wars movie and how good the movie is.

"SW geeks" like me are as proud as us "TPC geeks" and "JA geeks" and "Steve Isaacs geeks". It's not like everything TPC puts out, JA put out, and Steve Isaacs will put out, is golden -- some bronze and silver in there, too. Why in the world not be a geek about something or multiple things? Can't think of a single reason. Love it.

hahaha! I saw them out there but I had no clue that it was to that extent and that they were refusing to line up somewhere else... Even so, they have plenty of time to move over to the Arclight!

Since I will be in the area, my mission for tomorrow during a break at school is to interview some of these Star Wars uber-fans.

There are certain times to be an uber-fan and line up extra early... these folks have things a bit mixed up!
Lining up that many days in advance? You gotta admire their determination, even if there's really no point behind it! You would never see me lining up for something more than a few hours in advance.

Ok, I lied, I'd camp out for a day/night. Not for a redone Star Wars though!

Okay...I am totally amused by this now. See, the local radio station here in Orlando got the phone number of the pay phone there and called and talked to a guy today. It was pretty amusing...because it is hard to grasp that they are lined up for the movie. BUT..I cannot WAIT to tell the radio guys that the movie is NOT even playing there!!

Thanks for the tidbit Steve. And I totally agree...I saw Star Wars as an awestruck 12 year old. I only saw the rest of them this year because my 9 year son it totally into the whole thing. My heart was so happy when he totally fell in love with the original. There is hope yet.

Have a great night!

~ Susan

Amen to that brother!

Ahhhhh, but if people only cared about things that were truly "important", the world would be a much duller place...

From one who had to hear the blah blah blah on the new Dr Who? for weeks and is wqaiting for the blah blah blah on Revenge of the Sith! (it's all about nurturing that seven year old inside...!)

Steve,
Have you gone to the dark side?
You are speaking like you are getting old!!
You haven't even seen the last episode!
Wait until then to pre judge, I am sure there will be something that does get to you. It's the tragedy of the film that will sink into you! Believe me!
May the force be with you!

Thanks Steve. I haven't smiled in days. *grinning*

Hey Steve, been a few since my last post. Hope everything going schmoove for you....

Be safe be happy

tonto

Steve, while i am with you that episode 1 sucked a fistfull of donkey dick, and episode 2 only reminded me that episode 3 would surely be the next in the sequence, i just have this feeling that episode 3 is going to give people EXCACTLY what they want...

it's going to be dark, the bad guys are going to win, and we're all going to get to see the creation of Darth Vader

what could be better than that?

Steve,
I completely agree with everything in this post.
I was excited back in '99 about "NEW STAR WARS", but was deceived. When episode 2 came out I was impressed, only because it looked good compared to episode 1, it still let me down. But the reason I have lost all hope in Star Wars is the new DVD set of the "Original Triliogy". The Special Editions were bad enough, but when they start digitally inserting the new actors into the films I just can't take it anymore.

RIP
Star Wars
1977-1983

Since we seem to be misrepresented just about everywhere on the net these days...

The line is for Star Wars, this is true. But the experience of the line is so much more than any mere movie. This is a 6 week long block party where we get to hang out with all of our nerdy friends. We're out there for a good cause, raising money for the Starlight Starbright childrens foundation. We refuse to leave the Chinese for pleanty of reasons.

-we havent heard a solid "no" from Lucasfilm, Fox, or the Chinese
-there's no point to lining up at the Arclight, they have reserved seating
-outside the Chinese is a high traffic area where we can get a lot of attention from tourists and other passers by, sucking in more money for our charity, the Starlight Starbright Childrens Foundation.
-we've been planning this line for the past 3 years and we're not about to get spooked, not yet anyway.
-we have a prime spot in hollywood where we have a working relationship with the local businesses, the police, and the theare itself.

This line lasts untill May 19th. I've been there of and on since April 2nd. We dont have to stay consecutively the whole 6 weeks. We log hours. If we need to get back to our lives, our jobs, our families, our bathrooms, then we just log out and go, then come back when we're ready.

There are about 120 people that have officially logged hours in this line. Each of them has traded off with the other keeping around 20 people in the line at all times.

We really want the movie to be at the Chinese. We believe it belongs there. So now our line to see this movie has turned into a kind of sit-in.

The line is an experience all its own. No matter how crappy the movie could possibly be, the line will be the true experience. We hope the movie will be entertaining, we will not be disappointed if it is not.

Visit our website and maybe it can answer some more questions for you. Give us a call on our pay phone... you may get a laugh out of it. Kick a couple bucks to SLSB. Just know that none of this is ever as bad as it appears on the outside.

NEEEEEEEEERD!!!

:bows: with pride.

Hi Steve

Great as the old films were, shite as the prequals have been so far(i still like 'em a little bit though),Star Wars is the only films in history that will have people queing up for months before its released,i certainly wouldn't do that for anything, anyways, this is the very last time a Star Wars film will have a premier, let 'em enjoy the moment,it won't happen again.

The trailer for ROTS rocks, but they always lead you to a false sense of security that the film will be good.
