Ok, I was wrong

Sith

I admit it. Went to see "Revenge of the Sith" tonight, and after much maligning on my part, I have to say I really really liked it. Maybe even loved it. Hated the first one, and didn't like the second one very much, but even with that avalanche of lowered expectation going in, "Sith" was pretty great. Go figure.

I could find a couple elements to critique, mainly concerning the speed of Anakin's descent into the dark side. Seemed like a scene or two were missing. What I truly enjoyed though, was the feeling of deep, tragic loss at the close of the film, akin to how "Empire" ended on such a sad, unresolved note. "Sith" ended and I found myself looking back on all the (good) Star Wars movies I have grown up with and being really thankful for them. A good save from Lucas- a strong ending/bridge to his twin trilogies.

It was so good, think I'll go watch the bootleg I downloaded...

Comments

i downloaded the bootleg a few days ago as well.

In fact, that's how i watched it. Perhaps i cheapened my experience, but i also could not wait around for friends to get off their asses and accompany me to the theater in a few days.

I thought it was great, but Steve, don't you think Anakin turned to the darkside a little too easy?

Here's my summary of the film...

Anakin: I'm a good guy!
Jedis: you're not a jedi master
Anakin: You guys suck!!
Darth sidious: Join the dark side
Anakin: OK!
+END OF MOVIE+

I mean, ok, so they hinted way back in the second movie that he could turn. But still, he wasn't a bad guy. Not even when he started killing all the good guys, it still seemed so out of place. I think if they really wanted to show his turn to the darklside, it should have taken place over all 3 films, and not just the very end of the second and at the end of the 3rd. That cartoon they called "episode 1" should have been his first issues with the ideas of turning.

*steps off soapbox*

i am analyzing this too much.

All in all, it was a good movie. The experience was enhanced for me by being there with my 7-year-old son, and my 34-year-old brother who was about 6 when I took him to see the original Star Wars. Seeing the two of them "high five" each other when Yoda kicked someone's butt made it all worth any problems I had with the storyline.

Steve have fun at Vegas?? You lucky guy. I’ll be tuning in for sure. Wait a minute it’s tomorrow not today… K- I’ll be tuning in tomorrow

Aha! I knew you'd like episode 3.

You think Anakin's decent was too fast? I thought it kinda made sense because it was that split second decision when the council was trying to arrest Chancellor Palpatine... Anakin was torn and had to chose between Mace and the Chancellor and ended up helping the Chancellor out because all he could think about was having the chance to save his Padme. Perhaps the message was that one wrong move in life can lead to a sudden downward spiral? Or maybe how vulnerable man can be and how easy it can be to be swayed by the darkness and greed? A strong temptress she is, the dark side.
I think Star Wars is full of underlying messages about the afterlife and human life in general.

I agree about that feeling of loss when everything was going to the dark side... but the light of good never went out thanks to Yoda and Obi-Wan and all those on the jedi side. Somehow I felt worse for Anakin since it all basically stemmed from him and that he had to suffer so much when his intentions were good and based on love.

On a completely different note,
Happy (belated) birthday to the lovely Larissa! Hope you guys had a great weekend!

I loved the movie! I agree they could have explained a bit more about what he went through regarding his conversion to the dark side. The other thing I didn't like so much...does everything need to be CGI? I miss the early Lucas when the Star Wars films had a more organic quality to them. Sith was a bit too ADD for me. I got a bit despondent and weepy at the end. Empire will always be my favorite... I just like scoundrels ; )

Peace, jj

I agree with everything six7 said - Anikin turned to quickly and easily but what a fab film. I really enjoyed it! The dialouge was still poor and the acting was better but the story was great!

Glad to know you were wrong. I haven't seen it yet.

Anyone else catch the irony in the fact that it was his own turn to the dark side that fulfilled his prophecy that Padme would die?

If he had stuck with the Jedi, and had been at her side during delivery, she would have lived.

Makes me wonder if the emperor and his talk of "manipulating mediclorians to create life" was some sort of foreshadowing (or...postshadowing?) that it was he who had created Anakin. If you can manipulate someone's life, and create their life, it stands to reason you would have some sort of control over their destiny. Hence, he sticks Anakin with all sorts of "destined" traumas that would force him to choose the dark side.

"Outsider" accoustic sounds awesome...listened over and over on the TPC radio.

Saw ya at the first Dragonfly show, so I'm hoping to make another trip this summer since you mentioned on the board that you'll be LA grounded for the next few months. Please give us folks in the eastward direction as much advance notice as possible. TPC Vegas still on the menu? -Al

Ah shit, I almost missed it. I thought it was tomorrow....

i'm just glad you don't feel the need to pan it like my more cynical friends that probably felt a pre-determined need to hate it. i totally enjoyed it and thought it made for a great "movie" experience in the way that sci-fi/action movies should provide.

next up: monster-in-law, right? ;)

I can't believe you people!
No taste in a film at all.
It was more like a comedy to me...the acting was horrendous except for Senator Palpatine(Ian McDarmid).
I mean you can't fit everything(going to the dark side)in such a short time but come on!
Bad scenes:
1)When Obi Wan watches on the video Anakin killing all the Jedi and all he can muster is, 'Oh I can't watch this anymore',...I think he would have been more devasted..
2)when Padme gives birth to twins, no surprise?!?! But she already knows their names?
etc. etc.
Well at some points the pace was grueling, should have been a darker film since it was Anakin going to the dark side..
Sith had some great visuals but what a disappointment!

Did anyone catch the George Lucas cameo?

I'll have to check this out as well. Based on the first two releases, I was beyond disappointed. I mean, come on, Jar-Jar Binks. What was that all about? An Ewok could kick his ass.

I really likes Revenge Of The Sith.
After i saw it,i had the same feeling i did when i saw Return Of The King, that it had been cut considerably in length, but where we had the Extended Versions of the Lord Of The Rings films(which are infinately better the the theatrical versions)we probably won't have an extended version of this, which is a shame.Where the other Star Wars prequals could have done with less, this one needs more.

Really loved it though.
