Don't Change A Thing For Me
Rockstar: INXS. It cracks me up when friends of mine ask me if I have been watching it. Let me see... I love reality TV, have watched all of the Mark Burnett shows, and I'm in a band with one of the hosts. Um no, not watching it, it's on against "Brat Camp" ...no can do!
Of course I have been watching it.
Missed the first half hour of the first show by some weird voodoo curse that seemed to afflict not one, but two friends' TiVo's - the show just started taping in the middle. I had just moved into my new place and didn't have any TV yet. I tried to BitTorrent it, but for some odd reason, couldn't lay my digital hands on that one either. So I have missed all the bio/backstory stuff at the start of the series.
At this point, the show is down to nine singers. I like to call them "singers", so that I don't contribute to the lovely Brooke Burke's coming very close to the legal limit of saying the words "Rocker" and "Rock" in the course of an hour. This last week they got rid of Tara. Cool with me.
Karmic Disclaimer:
I have to qualify any criticism with saying that what the singers are being subjected to is really insane. Reality TV of the Mark Burnett kind is mainly about throwing people into pressure cooker-like, very unreal situations, and filming the drama that occurs. Which by the way, is fine by me. Loved all his shows so far. I have a lot of respect for the people in the pressure cooker, though. I know what it's like to sing onstage, and via my Camp Freddy experience, know what it's like to jump onstage and get my voice around a cover song and feel it. But the whole trial by fire before a nationwide TV audience thing is crazy, and I wish them all (and the therapy they will probably need after the show is done) much luck.
Ok, now that is done and I feel all diplomatic and shit, let's get to the rundown. I am all about Jordis. Love her voice, the best thing that can happen is that she doesn't win, and she gets a record deal from this show, and hopefully works with a good producer who lets her do her own thing. If I were a label guy, I would have her signed already. What an amazing voice. Her whole vibe on the show has been sincere and really refreshing. She is definitely my favorite.
Ty is a fantastic singer, his pitch and tone are really great, but I hear what the band is saying about him seeming a little too "stage-y".
Last week in the press junket show, he confessed to not know much about INXS' catalog of music. Dave defended him, but I think Ty blew it. He should have the band's past all studied and figured out. You don't need to lie and make up stories about the first time you heard the music, but at least listening to the old records and forging an opinion seems pretty much expected. I mean, it's a competition. Any weakness of yours is an opponent's strength. And not knowing the song "Everlong"...???
Also, let's be frank here for a minute. He cries way too much for being on a show called "Rockstar".
"There's no crying in baseball!!!"
-Tom Hanks - A League of Their Own
Mig seems like a good guy, pretty cool vibe, and even though he is a stage guy, he doesn't come off like that. I don't think he is the best singer in the competition, but he always seems pretty humble and straightforward and that's cool.
Suzie gets better and better.
Marty seems like a bro. Reminds me of people I know. Great stage presence, and he has that trippy "eyes looking in different directions" thing which looks great on camera. Bowie-style. Not sure why he got the "encore" for the Nirvana tune, I didn't think it was the best song of the night that week. I think he might be a fairly good choice to win the show.
Not feeling Jessica or Deanna. Shame they nixed Daphna and Heather in the same week. Even if they had an off week, they would have been much better to have on the show long term. Generally, they were good.
JD. Um, well, I really didn't like him at first, all that pelvic discomfort dancing in the first perf show... but he is really important to the drama. Vital, even. Kind of the villain, kind of like the one on Survivor who will do anything to win. Without that "character", the show might be kind of slow. But hey man, even when he's BEING HUMAN, he's still a HUMAN BEING.
... what does that mean???
He has had some good performance moments though, and definitely has his own stage presence. Just stay away from Queen bro. Seriously. Stay away from Queen.
Brandon is a great singer, but seems a bit too southern-fried for this band. Which is kind of the problem. With all this focus on who will be the new lead singer of INXS, I find myself recognizing just how good Michael Hutchence was as a singer/frontman. He really was pretty great. I wonder how good any of them can be in that context. Have to say though, from the first perf show there has been a lot of growth with all of them, so who knows. I wish the "mansion" shows were longer, they always seem to end right when I am getting into them. Also it's nice that the "results" show doesn't engage in any of that American Idol fake-out crap when they are kicking someone off. That is straight up "TV producer's soul going straight to hell" business right there.
I like when they let some of the more spicy Dave-isms through. From what he says, there are a bunch of 'em that don't make it to the air. The comeback about having JD's sister call him killed me. I love that shit. As the weeks go on, he seems more and more comfortable in his role. It's very good to have someone pick up on the aspects of performance that a regular "host" might miss. I know that he has a hard time being too critical, as he really has come to have a great deal of affection and respect for all of them.
Critiques aside - I am sure they are having the time of their lives, and I wish 'em all well.
Since we're on the subject, if I were to make an INXS playlist here's what it would be: (feel free to use this information, Ty.)

I like what you wrote. I think MIG is going to take the job. He's not the strongest singer, but he is one of the stronger performers. Overall picture, he rocks it.
Jordis? I hope she doesn't win. I don't think she's good for INXS and nor they for her. I am waiting on her first CD though.
Brandon Southern-fried? That's okay, some of the best people I know are just that. You are right. I have associated him too often with the Southern rock bands. Though I didn't think he did Lynyrd Skynyrd all that well. I think he would do well with Blackfoot.
Ty should read your list for INXS too...killer list.
Okay, I was glad you wrote something new for today. The community is down and I'm having withdrawals from reading it.
I can't wait for Tonight's show as it's performance night. I don't know why I like this show, reality TV to me is something on History channel. It's typical though, if I like it, it's in the bottom of the ratings.
Thanks for sharing your comments, I had a laugh at a bit of what you wrote.

Hi Steve!
I'm still bummin' about the whole kitty trauma the other night...how are you doing?
I've been waiting/looking for your input on RS:INXS....thanks for sharing! Care to go out on a limb and tell us who you think should win it???
Have a great week!

I’m one of those who is so not feeling the Jordis vibe. Briefly met her at HOB and I thought, blah. The impression she gave me is that she already getting into the alienated rockstar role and in my opinion its way too early in the game for that. It was definitely weird. And on a completely opposite level Mig was great. He wasn’t my favorite from the show, but he’s really growing on me.
JD I totally love. Although he tries to be a sneaky bastard or at least comes off like that, he’s the only one that gives off more energy and passion. He’s like the little mischievous kid that’s always getting in trouble yet lights up the whole place. Plus he’s definitely entertaining on stage and anything but blah.

oh yeah those are my top 3 pics.

Steve- Jordis...does indeed....RoCk. As per JD, I think he's just there to take up space and time. It should be interesting to see where this goes in the next few weeks. Also, sorry to hear about the neighbors cat (bummer.) Take care.

that's great! i was just at 6767 and thinking "i wonder what steve i's take on rockstar:inxs is.."
lo and behold!
as my main man chris cornell once said - so now you know (actually, i think he said "who gets mystified".. the rest of soundgarden said "so now you know"..)
still waiting for the cd. is it just me or does it seem to be taking forever?!

Jordis is pretty good. I dig her.
As far as who will win, who knows.
We've all got our favorites. But in the end it seems like everyone is sure having fun with the show. INXS/Dave/Contestants and us onlookers. Sometimes I can't help but think about all these Reality TV show though. I'm starting to think someone should create a reality show based on me sitting around watching reality shows..Talk about entertainment huh? *groan*

Very hard to rank up there to Hutchence. When I saw the guys singing one of his songs the other night, they did a good job, but it was lacking that edge that he gave each of his songs. He was the complete package. Great show. All the vocalists up there are talented. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out.

Steve! If you don’t have it, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND picking up Shine Like it Does, the INXS anthology 1979-1997. I love it! And you must add to the playlist: The Stairs (live), Elegantly Wasted, Mystify, Beautiful Girl and Suicide Blonde. There are way too many great INXS songs to only have 10. Any chance you’ll be at the NYC Vanity Fair in Concert show? Camp Freddy will be there again, rumor has it, and I'm hoping... It was a great time last year, and I’ve yet to see you in person as I’m on the East coast, but looking forward to it.
Thank god 6767.com and your blog are up, going through community withdrawal!!
Wendybird, I got the feeling you thought that about Jordis, from the CF post at the community.
Love,
Sue

OK, I didn't count them, there were 11 not 10 songs. :) Still need more!

Hey Steve,
I am surprised you didn't have "To Look At You" on the list. Probably the moodiest track they ever did. It was on the Shabooh Shoobah album. Definitely supported the "Don't Change" single well enough to make the album purchase warranted.
And for my two cents, I have to say I am pulling for Marty. I think he "fits" the band well for what/where they are. Then again, I have never been in their shoes, so I am probably full of shit...ha ha.

Dude
you an' I have already talked pretty extensively about the whole topic, but I gotta say one thing. RE: your INXS list...
how can you NOT have Original Sin on there?!?
How?!?

Cat killed by coyote - oy... sorry you had to witness that, Steve..
The one pet I had murdered was my black and white rabbit, Charlie. He was outside in his cage, somehow got out, and the nieghbor accidently ran him over. Didn't see him under her wheel.
The only time I heard my old cat do that wierd low growling noise was when we took him to the vet. low pitches like that mean threats and are kind of a "stay away or I'll shred you to bits!".
higher sounds, such as the 'Me' in "me-ow" are greetings and affection sounds.
just a bit of totally useless info from someone who grew up with cats.
I totally agree with the Rockstar INXS commentary.
Auditioning for a band and not knowing their music seems kind of silly. On the other hand, it could lend a fresh ear and perspective.
"alienated rock star role"..
Jordis? Really? Funny how some don't realize that any alienation going on is their own doing. You can only choose to alienate yourself - your life circumstances should not dictate who you're supposed to (or have to) associate with, or keep a distance from.
Does that make sense? I think I just confused myself...

Maybe I wrote that wrong… there were signs of a Diva emerging
And I don’t mean Diva in a good way but I have been known to be wrong. That’s just the impression I got.
Posted by: wendybird | August 9, 2005 06:50 PM
gotcha Wendy.. I guess I was just generally commenting on the Diva syndrome, what an interesting fabrication of one's own mind it is.
Never met Jordis- no dig meant at her, for all I know she could be the nicest most down-to-earth chick out there.
ladies and gentlemen the hollywood hills are on fire and there's smoke all around here
*cough cough* Alright, who was the careless one and threw the still-lit cigarette?
Posted by: mortisha8 | August 9, 2005 07:39 PM
A note on the "Diva" syndrome... not sure what your experience was Wendybird, but I have to think that anyone subjected to the spotlight as quickly as Jordis and the rest have been, might just be going through a massive adustment right now. Being all of a sudden famous and walking through a club, one might not come off as well as they might usually under different circumstances. Not saying that Diva-ism isnt the cause, but I also sympathise with those struggling to figure out how to "just be cool" with sudden celebrity.

I'm kind of underwhelmed by this whole Rockstar: INXS thing... No one seems good enough to make the grade, and the format is a hassle (3 nights per week...30 minutes, then 1 hour, then 30 minutes...).
And, Steve, cover your ears, I'm a bit dissed by Dave going gaga over the show and the "kids," rather than going gaga over TPC and you. Concerns me that his heart is not in it... Crap, it's been months since TPC was an obvious priority around here.
Just my 2 cents...Take it or leave it.
Posted by: Mike | August 9, 2005 09:23 PM
Steve, I totally agree with what you were saying about them all needing therapy when they get out of that Rockstar house! How do they do it?!! All that pressure. That's what I respect about all of the contestants. I would have peed myself getting up to sing in front of INXS, and Dave, and on TV to boot! It amazes me each week. I keep reminding myself they do all have a performance background..but still!!! :O
Being an INXS fan, I'd be worse. Probably freeze up. So maybe it's better to not be such a fan to be in this contest. It's all so bizarre, INXS choosing a new singer this way. I'm starting to miss Michael Hutchence again.
I'd love to see more of Dave's comments on the show. He is "the host' afterall. It says so in the credits. :D
Hugs
Lisa

I just read Mike's post; and actually he's made a good point. I'm missing the TPC focus.
Posted by: ylais | August 9, 2005 09:27 PM
I love it when Steve mingles with us up in here.
All this pressure and sudden stardom talk makes me wonder if the crowds will always be as enthusiastic? What happens if they're not? Will it be different going out for real with INXS and playing a show compared to playing in front of a studio audience that is told what to do and when to cheer and look alive?
Posted by: mortisha8 | August 9, 2005 09:46 PM
good point. She wasn’t necessarily rude but it’s just the vive I got. Mig and Brandon were hella cool (I felt bad I called Brandon a wanker…in the TPC INXS thread). I briefly joked with Mig about being one of the photographers in the pit when he becomes big and famous. (I was a bit tipsy) Both of them introduced themselves and I thought it was sort of funny because I obviously knew who they were. They came across as humble and flattered to be noticed.
When we first met you I thought you were hella cool too, in fact I was sorta dumbfounded on how real you were.
The conversation with Jordis went:
Me: “Hi may I take your picture “
Jordis no reply kinda digested it, slightly nodded her head, while someone else told her something in the ear and then posed
Me: I take a picture of her
Jordis: “how did it come out” her first words to me
Me: “Well let me take one more just to make sure I get a good one” and then I sorta joked, “I’ll make you look beautiful…”
Jordis: poses again and then says “Let me see it”
Me: Shows her the picture
Jordis: “I approve”
Now had she said this in a somewhat cute joking tone I wouldn’t have thought anything of it. But the entire vibe she was giving was a bit weird/uglyish. It gave me a glimpse of where I think she’s headed. Maybe she was nervous or something and I sort of interpreted it wrong, I was drinking after all and I definitely agree that all this has happened so fast and it takes some adjustment. But for some reason I get the impression that it’s going to take a lot of years for her to really understand or gain some real perspective. She’s definitely young and that could be it, but some people get it and some people don’t. I’m probably not making any sense. Maybe it was what I was bringing into the conversation or I just looked through it with foggy glasses. Ha maybe she was just a little scared after all I am looking quite monstersish lately…
Don’t get me wrong if she comes out with some bitching CD I’ll definitely by it but it’s going to take more for me to buy the person.
I love the music of many artists but I don’t absolutely love many artists.
Sorry I should have edited this a little. I tend to go on and on sometimes. I’ll put a cork on it now…
Posted by: wendybird | August 9, 2005 09:58 PM
:O Wendy! That's some story. I'm getting what you're saying, from that interaction. Did she have a manager with her or something?
Posted by: ylais | August 9, 2005 10:09 PM
I don't know who the blond lady was
Posted by: wendybird | August 9, 2005 10:12 PM
Can she actually approve or disapprove of a photo when it's taken in public? Where you took it is a public place, so you can use it all you want without her approval right? (I went through a thing with that when a pic of my son when he was a baby turned up on the cover of a gay magazine in San Fran! Too bad, it was taken in public.)
Posted by: ylais | August 9, 2005 10:17 PM
you know what, maybe I just took it all wrong...
Posted by: wendybird | August 9, 2005 10:34 PM
so..er...let's talk about something else hey?
lol.
Posted by: ylais | August 9, 2005 10:47 PM
I think Mark Burnett should be the new lead singer of INXS.
Posted by: dick | August 9, 2005 11:23 PM
Maybe Jordis can get the benefit of the doubt this time, if this was before the CF show, she may have been freaking out that she was about to perform with all those awesome artists…hopefully it was only that.
On another note, Steve, did you see Sugar Town? I missed it before, it came out in 1999, but getting ready for work today, I caught it about 20 mins in, and was late for work so I could finish watching. Michael Des Barres!! LOVE HIM! And John Taylor, that man is a WAY underrated bassist, I saw Duran Duran last week, and was really impressed. I usually go along the lines of NIN or RHCP the Mars Volta, or Zep, but I have my 80’s fetish too, so I went to see them at Jones Beach. Their albums do them no justice. Definitely catch them if you can. I’ll see them again at Fashion Rocks in NYC next month, any plans to go? Oh, and speaking of Zeppelin, Sat night I saw a great performance…The Music of Led Zeppelin performed by Randy Jackson of Zebra, a super rock band with at girl named Allegra on electric violin, and the entire Long Island Philharmonic Orchestra. AMAZING. You haven’t lived till you’ve seen The Rain Song or Ten Years Gone played with a full orchestra. And I don’t know if you’re familiar w/Zebra, they were huge here on LI in the 80’s, but he does a mean Plant with his own twists. Zebra was always known for their affinity and talent for Zep covers. They even played I’m Gonna Crawl, thought that was a pretty bold choice. I know he does this on the East coast w/other Philharmonics, not sure about West coast, but don’t miss it if they come around. Have a great day, everyone!
Love,
Sue
