Twin Peaks And The Street Runner
Been running lately. Up and down Hollywood Blvd, Sunset, Franklin, Cahuenga, Highland, Melrose, you name it. It's really great to get out and see so much in so little time. I always thought that to go running, you needed to find some perfect scenic mountain path or athletically-approved straightaway to do it. No need. I like just getting up, getting out and cruising around. I like dashing by the tattoo shops, pizza joints, theaters, guys sleeping on the sidewalk, tourists, and meandering crazy people. Everyone has their own idea of what "scenic" means.
Tonight on Hollywood Blvd. I saw small filming crew setting up for a shoot. Right as I passed by, I saw director David Lynch sitting on a bus stop bench with a small camera giving out instructions. So cool. Never a dull moment in The HW. Lately I have been reading that Lynch is involved in a program to get Transcendental Mediation classes taught in public schools. This sounds like a fantastic idea to me.
When I was in high school, my Mother and I took a class in TM, and I really enjoyed it. She had to mention that the Beatles were into TM (they traveled to India to visit with TM's founder, the Mahareshi Mahesh Yogi) to get me to go, which worked. When you are 16 years old, the last thing you are able to do easily is to chill out, focus on your breathing, and try to find a complete stillness so that you can truly hear what is happening past your own ego, but I did enjoy it. I have been toying with the idea of taking the course again, but after checking out the new pricing for classes, um ... maybe not. There are many ways to meditate, and many paths to help one discover their own best method, and TM is just one way. I have worked on some other meditation methods, but I still hold that first one close to my heart.
P.S. I think David Lynch's white hair looks bad-ass. I hope later in life, my hair gets all Old Man Winter-Style.
P.P.S. Also, a shout out to my friend Syd Klinge who does a radio show "The Oddio Radio Show" with Lynch's daughter Jen Lynch on davidlynch.com.

I love Lynch's work. Glad to hear he's out there putting something else together. And Transcendental Mediation, they really should offer courses to the public. This guy is right on the mark. In today's stress-filled world, there's always room for relief. This guy can attest to that! As for running, I used to do quite a bit up in Beachwood Canyon. Should get up that way sometime if you haven't already. Scenic in a relaxing way, especially just before sunrise.

haha...was just gonna ask if you were able to still get in a good run where you are living. Personally, I hate running! Would much rather take a stroll =) But I am glad that you are feeling able to do that, especially since it seems to be so soothing for you. I'm just sort of imagining you running around, weaving in an out of pedestrian traffic in front of Manns with the impersonaters and all!! Great visual. Have a good one everyone.
PS. Wendy, I'll see you there on the 19th (thx Maria)

I can't freakin wait to move out there. I've never felt more at home away from home then driving down Sunset. First time I was there it seemed like I'd always been there. Like I knew what was just up ahead or around the corner without ever having seen it before. Freaky. And I agree on TM. It definitely has a place in schools, more so today than ever. It may just cut down on a number of aggressions. Have a good day Man.

I loved Twin Peaks--the TV series. I think that's one of the top Tv series of all times for me. I was rather fond of The Log Lady.
As far as running, I'd have to go for the more scenic route-Not to mnay interesting people to see here. Plus, I'd go with the road less traveled due to the fact I'd hate people to see me wiggling and jiggling all over the place. :-)
Have a good day.

David Lynch's movies are always awesome. Loved The Lost Highway....good stuff.

Dang Steve, you really do live in the center of it all. That's exactly where I roam on days I go to school. I always park on Franklin. I love the variety of apartment buildings around there.
I'm not too big on running but I love to go hiking up in Runyon Canyon.
Ahh, meditation.. I got into that in high school as well. Once a week during dance class we would devote the entire class to meditation and relaxation. I loved it because it was one of the classes I had in the morning and after it felt recharged and ready to take on the rest of the day.
There's really no need to take a class now that I think about it, you can meditate on your own. If only I had a backyard reminiscent of Lake Shrine...

Steve, have you seen David Lynch's Daily Weather Report? Every morning, he does a weather report right from his house in LA and puts it up for broadcast on the internet. It's the oddest, creepiest, yet most awesomely cool thing EVER! Lol, check it out here:
http://www.davidlynch.com/dailyreport/
And the world could indeed use some transcendental meditation right now. I like Lynch's idea of trying to get the US education towards a more "conciousness based" direction. Too many kids are just so blocked off and shut out from themselves and the rest of the world. Hell, I know I was in high school all of 3 1/2 years ago. I started meditating last year and really just trying to get in touch with things. If everyone was more in tune with that subtle energy connected to themselves and the world around thm, so much good could come from it. Not just peace (inner and outer), but I really think it helps one to find their own path in life.
Anyways, hope everyone here is well. :)
Peace!

Hey Steve- I literally pulled out my Copper Blue CD about 3 days ago and haven't stopped listening to it. Great CD. I think it's awesome when you dust off one you haven't listened to in while and it's like you have discovered a kick ass new band. Have a great week- looks like things are looking up a bit!

(Waives hand) Hi everyone,
I would definitely benefit from some form of meditation but…

I love running. Scenic nature-filled paths, people-filled urban areas, small towns, treadmills it just doesn't matter to me. It is a fun way to watch the world go by. As a non-athletic child, I never thought I would like it but I find it clears my head like nothing else.

Greetings Steve (a.k.a. Street Runner),
Glad to see your back around. The running thing is cool. I even take my running shoes w/ me on vacations and am always amazed how much I see before I jet in the rental car. Almost a year ago since your first Dragonfly Show that we came out to see. Even had the running shoes w/ me then and saw most of the streets mentioned. Hey, serious question: any chance of a Dragonfly reunion, say between 9/9 and 9/21 to celebrate the special occasion??? (Hook it up!) -Al

Hey, Thanks for talking up t.m. I've been a meditator since age six, and it has saved my life several times. Not in that "tree-hugger" - fucking weirdo way... seriously. At it's best, it's a path morning and night to places you can't begin to imagine, and at worst, it's a gift of 20 mins morning and night for you and you alone. That's alot in this day and age.
Thanks for mentioning ODDIO too. It's free off the davidlynch.com home page and Syd Klinge and I go way back, but always stay absurd.
Keep up the jogging...I only run when I have to.
