Go Where?
Thursday afternoon. Still hot here in Los Angeles. The whirlwind of getting (ONe) ready and out into stores has calmed for a bit. I went pretty crazy leading up to Tuesday. All night sessions working on the site, debugging the bastard for the PC IE audience (which is most of you, but let me tell you what a bitch it was removing those fucking gray "Active X" boxes). It was like I always felt like I had to be doing something to help The Channel be ready for Day (ONe), and my nerves got a little chewy in the process. Too much...
Well, as far as I can tell - everything came out ok, except for Tower Records - who Capitol had hooked up a deal with to digitally release "Go On". Unfortunately, Tower is 100 million dollars late with some kind of payment to the labels, and they are shutting them down for new releases (PDL from the Asylum had it right). So the "Go On" digital download is in limbo. I am told that if it goes on like this too long, we can just put the song on iTunes. We'll keep you posted.
Speaking of "Go On" and "Loophole", here is why we left them off "(ONe)"...
As we were making our final selections for what goes on the album and what was to be left off - we all went through our own processes, and left me tell you, for me - it was agony. Trying to balance out each song - which feels like a child - was maddening. I wrote all about it back in the NYC mastering blog entries. In the end - the only song that 3 out of 4 members voted to leave off was "Go On" (I would be the "put it on" vote).
I love "Go On". Lyrically that song is very central to what we are as a band. The spirit of taking a hard look at your life, and moving forward - to assess the mountain of white lies we all use to protect us and burning it to the ground and moving forward. Also the death/rebirth theme of the record has an echo in the reincarnation theme of the "Go On" lyrics.
We decided to leave it off, because a) it was the only song more than two members could agree on keeping off, and b) we wanted to have at least two songs to have for extra stuff - soundtracks, b-sides, whatever else. The custom is that every band should have some songs left over to spread out to other places. I personally felt okay about "Go On" being left off after thinking about it, because I know it can hold it's own as a "stand alone" song.
One sidenote - while we were on tour this Spring, we as a band listened down to the record and all freaked out that we had left "Go On" off, and made a last minute attempt to get it back on. We were told that it was too late, and that the song was already promised to...
...Tower Records - for a big promotion that looks like it won't even happen. Oh well. Welcome to the ins and outs of putting an album together.
We left "Loophole" off because even with the beautiful ferocious rock jam of the bridge, the main gist of the song was pretty poppy, and we didn't want the album to be off balance with that kind of music. "Why Cry" and "Blue Bruises" were enough of that type song on (ONe).

Good to know the waves have calmed a little for you now.

I wanted to thank you for documenting the process! It's the first time I've ever had access to anything like that and I found myself thinking of flamethrower speakers and walking through Times Square listening to it.
And as someone debugging a dynamic navigation for stupid IE right now, I get ya there too!
The new album rocks! Definitely worth the wait.
Congratulations.

I've been listening and becoming steadily obsessed with (ONe)... in particularly Night One
I know your interview said that if (ONe) was received well than you'd be releasing Planchette and now I am so intrigued... how much of this has been recorded and what is the actual likelihood that this will see the light of day
brilliant work on the rest of the album, can't wait to see what the future holds for TPC

Thanks for everything. Through all the things that went on for me this last year, you and the Panic Channel were somewhere that I could go to be excited about something and escape what was happening in my life if just for a few minutes of reading. Great Album! Hope to see you in FL!

I can understand why you left "Loop Hole" off of the album. Although it's a great song, it doesn't quite fit in with the rest. Still great, though.
Thanks for being the first band in a long ass time that I'm completely invested in. I finally have something to be excited about these days.

Love the process-watching, and grateful to have the album in hand. Also grateful to have the t-shirt from Circuit City. :)
Fantastic album - Bloody Mary raises my neck hairs in a way nothing has in a long time. Good luck with album sales and the tour!

Damn, Sue beat me again to our daily "NYC Listening Party" spam!
Let me tell you Steve, We (Sue, Kristen and myself) have been having so much fun planning this (and it's gonna be KICK ASS) because it's a labor of love!
I haven't taken (ONe) out of the CD player since I got it on day (ONe). Actually MB has a funny story concerning a co-worker who walked in her office during "night one" but I'll let her tell the story.
Thanks for getting rid of the annoying grey boxes, now can ya tell Billy Morrison how to get rid of them over at his blog....they drive me insane!
Peace!

It's been a pleasure watching your creative thoughts evolve into such a solid piece of work. Congratulations!!

aww, sorry to hear about the pain in the ass Active X boxes.. although honestly i don't think they're worth really stressing over considering what a great job you did with the site. I'm always amazed at your creative web skill.
Despite the trials and tribulations, the album turned out wonderful! As far as I see it all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. You can only do your best with what you have to work with, right?
Hopefully any other possible online technical wrinkles will be ironed out in time. A steady pace one step at a time will get you where you want to be.
Thanks so much for coming down to the listening party despite your busy schedule! I wasn't expecting anyone from the band to come, but there you were emailing me about it as soon as the word got out that a listening party was in the works. Hopefully you enjoyed the nice little time out to celebrate all your hard work.
I wish you a safe, easy, and enjoyable rest of your journey. You're a good man, Steve Isaacs. Don't change a thing.

As you very well know Steve, I'm torn on the omission of "Go On". While I understand the necessity of having material left over, I must say that the powers that came to be and the chain of events that unraveled that allowed the release without "Go On" just sucks, IMO. While the release is phenomenal, powerful, majestic, not overly produced or too "wet" and mixed and produced very well (great kudos to Ryan, Josh, Ted, and Brian), I just can't believe that the song is not on there. This is the last I'll say about it. I just hope it can be included in an appropiate movie release, or a B-side, or maybe even included on (TWo) when that comes to be. Perhaps I personally identified too much with the tune and yes, it CAN stand alone, but IMO, it's one of the best rock and roll songs written in a VERY long time, from anyone, anywhere.
All of that being said, I can't tell you how much I enjoy sitting here, drinking my Don Francisco Hawaiian Blend coffee, listening to (ONe), and laughing at the fact that Circuit City fucked up and gave me 4 shirts for my two CD buys. Because of this band and the board, I've made some friends that I'd never have met otherwise and no amount of "Thanks" can do that justice. I'm so very honored to have the mention, to be a mod, and to have been privy to this entire process for the past two years. This band came about in a time that music NEEDED it and I'm blessed to have been able to experience it.
Thank you Man.

Thanks for the backstory of "Go On"....I will keep my fingers crossed that it will pop up somewhere else....sounds like a lot of people are loving that song...
Loving the CD....nothing better than cranking that puppy in my car, driving down the road with the wind in my hair....best music I have heard in a long time....

Relax while you can...You have certainly earned it...
I second the motion that Plachette be realized and developed. Not only does Part 3 have all the sonic goodness to fill the 8 minutes, but the story is fantastic! Everything flows so well...Outstanding work.
I do not know if you ever recorded Ashes, but I thought it was a good song. Especially when I heard it live at the Dragonfly, I have to say I was surprised that it weeeded out of the mix so early on in the process. Its a beautiful track. The person its for obviously touched you deeply, and for you to share that is a powerful testament to your abilities as a songwriter...Maybe some day...

Whoa!!! Glad it didn't make it onto the cd... I mean come on, more "woe is me" lyrics... Didn't you get the letter from Producer Dave on how that kind of seriousness in rock almost killed rock...
lol... just kidding... it's a rocking song...

Steve,
When I was at the conference in California last week we learned about a 'new' world court which the US was not a part of. I understand that the WTO as well as the EU have fallen apart as global organizations, but others, I guess, are emerging in their place or instead of or among them, etc... I also thought it was interesting that some new thinkers were thinking about putting themselves up to "go forward" to represent the "cultural sector" and this included American artists and scholars in an international group. It started sounding like the Rob Zombie "prophecy" which I found about cruising through your Myspace while playing that Panic Channel game. Mind you, I've had the lyrics wrong all this time....but, sweet - getting the defences of the darkness to back down. You know about this, right? I don't know if that's a question you were expecting such a convoluted answer to but sometimes we can be real in virtual space, or what's turning into "blended reality". b.

Hi, Steve,
I've seen in your posts and heard in your podcasts that you have trouble sleeping sometimes. Me, too. Insomniacs unite! Have you ever tried natural remedies - - e.g., Valerian root? Also, eating turkey and bananas helps, too . . . tryptophan. Then again, perhaps lack of sleep fuels creativity.

many people agree that Go On is easily the best song of them all!
it is...

Saw y'all on Leno and now Kimmel. I have three words:
TIGHT
CONSISTENT
ROCKIN'
I'm buying this cd. I'm picky these days since I'm old-school. You have an excellent, clear, and strong voice. The rest of the band is awesome, too, but this is your blog. :)
About the sleeplessness. No cures to offer, just sympathy, as I have the same problem. The worst part is that I have to be at 4:30 am to go teach.
Hope Panic Channel's efforts are rewarded.
