...just without the party.

Halloween Season Are Go! or " Culturally it's important to acknowledge death".

Ahh. Fall seems like it arrived today in Los Angeles. Which means that the same old same old sunshine was briefly halted to allow for some cloud cover. There is always one day that signals that dark skies are around the corner, a day of possibility... the onset of Halloween Season, if you will.

The Halloween-obsessed young boy (kind a like a little me) who lives in my apartment complex is on Turbo Extreme mode: the gravestones are out in the garden, a zombie-white hand is jutting out from the dirt, cobwebs mysteriously have already accumulated in the trees. The way it should be.

Getting together the seasonal agenda to visit mazes and dark walks, like usual. Sadly this year will have no Hallowed Haunting Grounds... A moment of silence. please. Apparently some of the stuff went to this place.

A plant outside my bedroom window has decided to start growing tendrils into my bedroom. They're sneaky, these guys. One sent some spidery shoots into my kitchen over the stove a little while back. Kinda creepy, but I didn't want to stop them. I was really curious where they planned to go... seems like they had a whole concept, I wanted to see how it turned out. Someone chopped it up, and now we'll never know.

Now the one in the bedroom.

In plant logic, why go away from the sun? It doesn't make sense.

niether does this...

Q:
Hey Steve, any idea if and when TPC will visit Holland?? Will Why Cry be released here as well?? (been spamming the radio networks here for weeks, but no one seems to have heard about TPC yet… bloody shame though)
(Ester)

A:
No idea when we will be coming to Holland, but I have heard so many great things about Amsterdam, and can't wait to visit there. I'm not sure how our single releases work in Holland, but thanks so much for helping us, we really appreciate it.

Q:
high there...i was curious what the significance was (if any) for the cut-off stripey sleeves you wear when u perform...is it for good luck? or another reason....also i notice u recently got some new ink...didn't get a clear view but appears to be some sort of tribal rose...could u take an up close picture and post it on your flickr by chance? thankx dood....(ONe) iz killer btw!... absolute perfection! A:
For me it's a bit of a visual echo of the wings in my Buddy Black tattoo design, mixed with a bit of Tim Burton.

As for the new tattoo yeah, got a black & grey rose wrapping around my left arm. Colin at Shamrock Social Club is doing it. It's not tribal, more super fine single needle work. I wanted something that looked like it came out of an encyclopedia; perfect, precise. Originally I went in for a color piece, but now am trying to decide to leave it black & grey or not.

Q:
hi steve. I was wondering what happen to the orginal why cry (half hearted)? ashes and unholyghost? will they ever be played live again? and the white version of bloody mary.
(jake)

A:
Unholy and Ashes will come back most probably, but Half Hearted I think not. The (white) version of Bloody Mary might just live as a site giveaway, or we might cannibalize some of the music into a new piece.

Q:
I am curious now that the album has been out, how do you feel about the record label choosing to release "Why Cry" first as opposed to the bands internet release "Teahouse of the Spirits"?
(MJD)

A:
Good question, here's the story:
We didn't chose "Why Cry" as the first single. We would never pick a song that was so radio-friendly sounding and not really representative of our core sound to go first. It is a Panic Channel song and it's our expression, but it 's not an accurate first impression. "Why Cry" was a song I wrote before the formation of The Panic Channel as a way to express how wrecked I felt when my girlfriend at the time dumped me. Simple as that. I was feeling SO bad and fucked up, that writing that song and playing it alone in my living room seemed to make the feeling of loss go away.

We always thought that "Teahouse of the Spirits" should have been the first single, it just felt right as an introduction to the band. We are a Rock band an should come out rocking, bottom line. The company felt that "Why Cry" was the move, so they spent their money on that. I have had two record deals now, and neither label asked the band what they thought single should be, so I wasn't that surprised.

In October, "Teahouse of the Spirits" will be released to American radio and we'll see what happens with the song that we feel better represents us. That's why we agreed to the inclusion of "Teahouse of the Spirits" on the Madden 07 game because it would spread "Teahouse", and that's why we put it on iTunes before (One)'s release as an "Internet single".

Q:
Hey Steve,
1. I heard that TPC would be opening for RHCP this fall.
2. Is TPC going to have a headlining tour this fall? I need my TPC fix. You guys are awesome live! I love the intimate feeling of the shows.
3. In regards to the thepanicchannel.tv giveaways/contest. Can we enter more than once a day? It doesn't say anywhere and I don't want to disqualify myself for entering several times a day (because I have been). I know others have been asking the same question.
(LadyM)

A:
1. Not true.
2. Thank you, we appreciate that. At the moment, it doesn't look like we'll be doing a headlining tour in the Fall. We'll be back on the road in mid-January for the RS Supernova tour.
3. Only enter once - only the first entry will count.

Q:
1. Boxers or briefs?
2. Triple edge or Mach 4?
3. Spray, solid or roll on?
4. and for the real important stuff...will you be coming east soon?
(IdJut)

A:
1. Sometimes boxers when there are no clean briefs, and when there’s no clean anything, then nothing.
2. Neither - electric razor.
3. Solid. "Bronzeberry Frost". I can’t believe that they still make spray - fucking insane.
4. Sadly, no.

Q:
1. Do other members of TPC post or lurk here? How about a Q&A w/ Chaney?
2. How and when did you get into Web development, Steve?
3. Will TPC record an "unplugged" collection of tunes?
4. What's the most memorable show TPC has played thus far?
(Bri@n)

A:
1. No - I think Dave checks this page out, but not Perk and Chaney. Dave and me are the Internet obsessed ones in the band - Perk and Chaney are more music-obsessed, they are out playing all the time.
2. I started when I was stuck in hotel rooms every night for a year and a half while touring in the “Tommy” tour. I got a laptop, and got really, really into graphic and website design. I spent a few years working in Painter, then Photoshop, HTML, Flash, now blog engines and a little CSS.
3. No plans at the moment, but since I come from an acoustic coffeehouse background, I would love nothing more than to track some tunes unplugged-style.
4. For me, it would be either the Washington DC or the Chicago stops on the Spring Tour 2006. The crowds were just incredible, and it was like a dream playing those shows. So much fucking fun.

Kepaniwai Park

A look around Kepaniwai Park, the site of one of Hawaii's greatest battles (that I mentioned before) in the Iao Valley.

This guy jumped off a bridge into the river below in the Iao Valley State Park as we were walking by.

Honolua Walk

In Kapalua, there is a hidden little snorkel spot accessible via this amazing jungle walk. My little still camera's video function and YouTube's heavy video compression doesn't do it any justice, but here is a stroll under the canopy of trees for you to enjoy.

Kapalua Sunset

Here is the sunset from Kapalua Beach, Maui last night.
And here is a pic, becuase the video just doesn't do it justice:

Maui Adventure

maui_palms.jpg

Yeah, the onslaught ended up being more of an on-trickle. I still have loads of half-written posts and stuff to catch up on, it will just have to come when it comes. The plan was to spend last Monday and Tuesday unloading all these posts, but shit happened.

Last week ended up being busy and scattered, ending with our performance on Carson Daly. This should air on NBC late night on the 22nd. We played “Teahouse” and “Left to Lose” and I mixed it up a bit by not playing guitar on “Teahouse” for the first time. I really enjoy just singing and not playing guitar, so any time Dave is all set to do all the string work, just singing is fine with me. Lots more fun.

I am in Hawaii now with G. Had an adventure planned for a while, and now we are on Maui, one of my favorite places on earth exploring, eating amazing food, basking in the warm Aloha vibe, and taking hundreds of pictures. They say Hawaii is the land that God loves the most, and it really is true. Everything is better here: nature, the air, the water, food, the friendly people, I love it so much.

Even with cloudy skies, Maui is paradise. We went on an adventure yesterday checking out the Iao Valley, the site of Hawaii’s biggest inter-island battle where King Kamehameha won the rule of the islands. Strange that a battle happened in one of the most amazing places that you can imagine, with misty capped mountains and a river flowing through the trees.

Ask A Question

As well as this site, I run thepanicchannel.com and the tpc myspace pages. I get a lot of questions about the band etc. And lately, they have been slipping through the cracks. So how about asking them here in the comments of this post, and ill do my best to answer as many as I can during this week's onslaught.

Begin the Onslaught

lunatic.jpg

Ok, since my blog posting has gone from daily to weekly to sporadic to almost never, I begin this week with an agenda: To OverPost™. To throw all the shit up on the Inernets that I have been procrastinating about for the last couple months. Prepare for meaningless links, recaps of stuff done weeks or months back with the band, and various bits of solid gold web magic that have have kicking around the festering sinkhole that is my mind. Onslaught '07 Begins...

Here is a fantastic clip montage from a show called "Celebrity Duets" that apparetnly exists. I havent's seen it, but if Little Richard is like this all the time, I might just have to introduce "Celebrity Duets" to my TiVo.
